Overview:
We need a hands-on analyst to run the financial close for our insurance subledger product across two entities, UK and US. Because one close is always starting, running, or wrapping up, this is a continuous role rather than a periodic one. You will troubleshoot pipeline failures, trace data issues with SQL, and explain in plain language to Finance and Operations what broke, what it affects, and what must happen to fix it. When engineering can’t ship a fix before the deadline, or when data quality issues weren’t caught before hand-off, you will apply controlled manual corrections so the close stays on schedule. The work is urgent and deadline-driven.
Key Responsibilities:
- Run and monitor the UK and US closes (month-, quarter-, and year-end) against the close calendar.
- Maintain the subledger side of the close calendar, including task owners, dependencies, and cutoff dates for both entities.
- Diagnose pipeline errors in Azure DevOps (failed runs, late or duplicate feeds, mapping and cutoff issues) and find root cause.
- Use SQL to reconcile subledger data to source systems and the GL.
- Validate and explain Earned Premium (EP) and IBNR calculations, including period-over-period movement.
- Apply documented manual fixes with before/after evidence and a true-up plan.
- Provide daily communication during close on status, dollar impact of open issues, required actions, and ETAs.
- Partner with the Business Analyst to build data extracts and exhibits for Finance.
- Create and track bug tickets for issues found in each close, and follow them through to resolution with engineering.
- Lead post-mortems after each close, document what went wrong, and propose and track process and pipeline improvements.
- Work with Finance and Operations between closes to make sure open issues and improvements are addressed in a timely way.
Required Experience:
- 4+ years in financial systems, data analysis, or finance technology; insurance or reinsurance strongly preferred.
- Advanced SQL (CTEs, window functions, reconciliation, performance tuning).
- Pipeline troubleshooting experience, ideally with Azure DevOps Pipelines (Airflow, dbt, SSIS, or similar also relevant).
- Working knowledge of EP, IBNR, accruals, reserves, and subledger-to-GL flows.
- Strong communication with non-technical audiences.
- Experience with ticketing tools (Azure Boards, Jira, or similar) and clear documentation habits.
- Comfort facilitating post-mortems and driving follow-through across Finance, Operations, and Engineering.
Nice to Have:
- Python for validation and reconciliation scripts.
- Exposure to actuarial or reserving data feeds.
- Multi-entity or multi-currency close experience (UK/US).
